I'm the kind of person who usually needs a little time to digest things, to process them... so here I am, late as always lol
I read #27 and saw the #28 preview and of course there is a lot of talk in the fandom around this break up.... which, let me tell you, isn't yet a real break up! I mean, let's not cross this bridge before we come to it
That said, it is funny to make some predictions! Last panel of #27 sees Spike telling Buffy that "maybe" it's time they took a break.
While Buffy has tears in her eyes.
The #28 preview starts exactly where the previous left.
Spike explains the reasons why he thinks that "maybe" a break is needed. And my first thought is WTF! Haven't we already heard this bs?? It wasn't convincing at the time with Angel and surely it's even less convincing with Spike. So, what's all this about?
I already expressed elsewhere my disbelief that the writers would break the spuffy relationship so soon and so easily, not after they have invested in them for so long imo. Because in spite of what many say, spuffy has been there since s5 and all through the comics.
That's why my take is that they are not going to break up. I see this as one of the many steps these two have to make to overcome their issues. Because they have issues, that's for sure. But I don't think they have nothing to do with what they are, with their personalities. I think Buffy and Spike complement and understand each other perfectly and from this point of view they are to me the best couple in the whole buffyverse. But they have a history, a long and often ugly history, and that's bound to create tension between them, at least until they clear everything out. They already did it with the AR, but that's not all. I see what's happening now as the reflection of Spike's insecurity issues.
Does he have reasons to be insecure? Hell, yes. While Buffy has clearly chosen him above Angel, the other vampire still casts his shadow on the couple and it is no coincidence that it's her mean comment about Angel to make Spike come to this decision. Which is not a real decision, considering how many "maybe" there are in Spike's speech. And the fact that he using more or less the same words Angel used in the past also makes me think a lot. Surely he knows (just like the writers know) what were Angel's excuses to break up with Buffy, and he is blatantly recycling them now. But while Angel was looking out for reasons to justify his dumping Buffy, I don't see a real will on Spike's part. I feel that what he really wants is for Buffy to once and for all reassure him that she is in love with him and that he is the one she wants in her life. Maybe starting with telling him that she loves him!
And as a Spuffy fan I think that Spike has done enough. He has fought to have his soul back because of Buffy, he has burned in the Hellmouth to save the world AND Buffy. He has been there for her, waited for her, helped her... now it's time for Buffy to do her part, to fight for this relationship and to finally show who's in her heart.
