My thoughts on this one:
I don't like how easily Buffy breaks free from Luke in the beginning. He is so strong and powerful and then he lets her run just because he touches the cross? seriously?
Giles makes the first mention of the Old Ones but this plot will only be used on ATS
Have I already said that I don't buy this idea that vampires want to wipe humanity off the world? That's stupid! Why would they? humans are their food!
Darla. I can't help it, she just makes me cringe! One of my issues with her is that she's always in game face, which is something that the 'most important' vampires of the show don't usually do so it's like she's just one of the minions. And when she brings Jesse to the Master she looks like a panting dog Also "Jesse's blood is pure"? wtf does that mean?
Again it seems that Darla knows nothing about slayer...
"Jesse is my responsibility. I let him get taken." What?? Buffy, hell, no! Willow and Xander disagree this time but she will later persuade them, especially Xander, that she's to blame for all the wrong that happens in the world. And this is a side of their relationship that really bothers me!
Xander and Willow talk of the secret they share. They are serious but one can tell that they are not so opposed to all that's happening. Maybe they were and always will be outcasts but from now on they'll feel 'special'
Angel. I think that this rewatch will make me dislike his character even more! I'll never understand how some people can believe that he honestly wanted to help, even less that he fell in love with her at firs sight. That's so unbelievable! It's so obvious that he doesn't care about Buffy or helping anybody. He is there lurking in the dark, hiding like a rat, waiting for her like a stalker (how long? was he there all night? did he see Darla and Luke bring Jesse in?). He clearly knows a lot more than he says and still does *nothing* or says *nothing* to really help Buffy. He knows about the Harvest and he must know about the vessel, he's been in the tunnel... why doesn't he tell her what she needs to do to stop all that happening? But no, he says nothing and lets her go alone to face the Master. Because 'they really don't like him' and because 'he is afraid' *snorts*. And all the while he clearly holds no faith that she will succeed. Not only he doesn't care that if she dies no one will stop the Harvest and the Masters, but he doesn't care tha she dies either! How can he later tell Buffy that he already loved her? And how can she be so dumb to believe him? Un-Be-Lie-Va-Ble!
Uh, sorry for the rant
Were was I...?
Ok. Here starts the weakest part of the episode: the entrance to the tunnel is bolted from the outside, how could the Master's minions put the bolt from the inside? Buffy had to make a huge jump to get out of the school, how does Xander manage to leave the school and follow her? And how does he go in the tunnels without seeing or being seen by Angel? Angel couldn't yet leave because of the daylight so he had to still be in the mausoleum... unless he went in the tunnels after Buffy?
I love that Willow takes Buffy's defence! She doesn't care to defend herself but is loyal to her new friend <3
Jesse. It's interesting how he deceives the others faking he's human, he really *acts* human. They all use the same trick, the vampire at the Bronze in ep.1, Darla, Jesse... yet Buffy has no suspect that Angel is doing the same O.o
Buffy seems so weak! She needs Xander's help to close the door and later she can't free her ankle from the vampire and she can't break down the door of the Bronze...
My first thought seeing Cordelia fall for Jesse's attitude was that it was OOC, that she is a strong girl and so she couldn't be so easily influenced, but now I think that it makes sense. She has been spoilt all her life, she is surrounded by people who always praise her and I guess that all this must get boring in the long run so being mistreated a bit might actually feel like a breath of fresh air.
The whole scene at the Bronze is ludicrous and Buffy is too confident when he faces Luke. He had almost killed her when they were alone, what, she thinks that she can beat him when they are surrounded by vampires and people to protect? But I do love that she does beat him and she does it using her wit. That's what makes her special as a slayer imo
In all this, Angel is once more lurking. And doing nothing helpful
"Giles: The next threat we face may be something quite different. Buffy: I can hardly wait!" It seems that now that Buffy knows she can have friends and share with them her secret she is not so contrary to being the slayer!
Final conclusion: from a plot point of view this episode is leaky as a sieve but the characters are great: we already get Xander's insicurity and anger issues, Buffy's martyr syndrome, Willow's kink for vengeance and breaking the rules, Willow and Xander's desire to be special, Cordelia's hidden weakness for outcasts.
On a side note weirdly SMG's acting here comes out as being the weakest among the main characters (except for Boreanaz who keeps... sucking ). Alyson is truly the best and Nicholas is surprisingly good, even if he is at his first acting experience - or that's what I know. Anthony is pitch perfect and Charisma is great when she does comedy, but er... not so much with the drama.
